The story of the felt saddle

For a long time, I searched for a connection between rider and horse that would allow the rider to perceive every movement of the horse while simultaneously providing sufficient protection from the rider's seat bones. Because I couldn't find anything comparable on the market, I set out to develop my own solution, and I'm proud that I succeeded in creating something suitable!

The result is a lightweight, comfortable, flexible and adaptable saddle that is ideally suited for track and trail riding, dressage and leisure.

Using a special combination of different layers of felt, foam, or – new since 2024 – felt and sheepskin padding, I have created a felt saddle with an excellent fit for the horse and exceptional comfort for the rider. The major advantage is that the saddle, even without a tree or gullet plate, offers a saddle-like seat. This positions the rider's leg loosely and allows the hip to follow the horse's movements with ease. The special construction relieves pressure on the horse's spine and keeps it free. The specially designed gullet ensures that even horses with very high withers can be ridden comfortably in this saddle. We deliberately omitted stirrups directly on the saddle to prevent pressure points and avoid deforming the flexible design. A stirrup pad, placed underneath when needed, fulfills this function.

The felt saddle is designed to allow for the rider's subtlest weight aids and more sensitive riding than a conventional saddle. This allows the horse to be guided with very light aids, and the rider is even better able to maintain their balance independently. Therefore, the felt saddle facilitates the learning and refinement of three key aspects of a good riding position:

  1. not to disturb the horse in its movement and to allow its movements
  2. to better sense the horse's reactions while riding and
  3. to deliberately influence the horse's movements in order to improve balance in all gaits and speeds.

The felt saddle thus promotes the ability to empathize with the horse's movements, develop an independent seat, and sense what is happening within the horse. But of course, you can also simply relax and enjoy the close connection with your equine partner! Our felt saddle is exclusively handcrafted in Germany. The felt for the top layer can be selected in a mottled or solid color. The underside is also made entirely of felt, is dirt-resistant, and washable. As our felt is a natural product, color variations are possible. In addition to many colors of New Zealand and Australian wool, we now also offer 17 colors of Alb felt. This comes from sheep in the region, thus avoiding transport halfway around the world.

The interior of the felt saddle is traditionally filled with various foams that don't clump together, even after extended use. Since 2024, this function has been taken over by our own handcrafted felt pads, which distribute pressure even more effectively. This ensures the saddle retains its shape and stability. The girth straps are made of Biothane, renowned for its exceptional durability and easy cleaning properties. A decorative strip/comfort pad made of easy-care microfiber in the center of the saddle completes the look. For an additional charge, the girth straps can also be made of leather, and the comfort pad is available in leather or, new this year, in loden.

Isabel Steiner

Isabel Steiner is the creator and developer of the felt saddles. As a passionate and highly successful rider, she can draw on extensive experience in training both horse and rider. With her unique way of conveying to students the feeling of the horse's movement, the development of the felt saddle is simply a logical step on the path to greater harmony and understanding with the horse. She herself is a long-time student of Bent Branderup, a Knight of Academic Art of Riding, and trains horses of various breeds. In addition to more than ten European Championship titles from the PPE (Paso Peruano Federation Europe) with her horse Expression, she breeds outstanding young horses on a small scale.
